Preschool // God Chooses David as King

Memory Verse:
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. — Psalm 119:105

Scripture Reference

1 Samuel 16; 2 Samuel 5 (The Jesus Storybook Bible p. 118-121)

Teaching Truth

  • God cares most about our heart, not what we look like.

Questions to Ask Your Child

  • Who did God send to find a new king?

  • What was God’s promise to David?

  • Did God want a king who was tall and strong or a king with a good heart? Why?

  • Why did Samuel pour oil on David’s head?

Family Activity

God cares most about our heart, not what we look like. Cut a large heart out of construction paper for your child. On one side of the heart have your child draw pictures of things that describe a heart that is not pleasing God. On the other side of the heart, have him draw pictures of things that describe a heart that pleases God.

Wrap-Up

With each lesson, help your child apply what they have learned by asking, “What do you think God wants us to learn from this story?” If you get stuck with finding the answer, refer to the weekly Teaching Truths.
