Preschool – David and Goliath

Memory Verse:
Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know. — Jeremiah 33:3

Scripture Reference

1 Samuel 17 (Jesus Storybook Bible p. 122-129)

Teaching Truth

  • We can trust God no matter what happens.

Questions to Ask Your Child

  • How do you think God’s people felt when they saw that they would have to fight Goliath?

  • Why do you think God used David instead of a great soldier to fight Goliath?

  • How many stones did it take for David to kill Goliath?

  • When was a scary time when you had to trust God?

Family Activity

Using a pipe cleaner, help your child make five small crosses. Now take the crosses outside and using dirt and a little water let your child make a mud pie. Scoop out a handful of the mud and place the cross inside the mud. Add more mud over the cross to make a ball. Repeat again until you have five balls (stones). Set the stones in the sun to dry. Next, use a paper plate and draw a “Goliath” face on the plate. Attach “Goliath” to a tree or fence. Once the stones are dry, throw them at Goliath to break them so your child can see the cross. Remind your child that Jesus is always with us. Talk about a “Goliath” in his life, maybe going to a new school or being scared of the dark. Pray with your child that we can trust God no matter what happens just like David trusted God to protect him from Goliath.

Wrap-Up

With each lesson, help your child apply what they have learned by asking, “What do you think God wants us to learn from this story?” If you get stuck with finding the answer, refer to the weekly Teaching Truths.
