Preschool // Israel Wants a King

Memory Verse:
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. — Psalm 119:105

Scripture Reference

1 Samuel 8-11; 1 Samuel 15 (The Jesus Storybook Bible p. 116-121)

Teaching Truth

  • God’s way is the best way.

Questions to Ask Your Child

  • Why do you think that God’s people wanted a king that they could see?

  • Did they trust Samuel that God was their king?

  • Saul did not love God with his whole heart. Do you think they were happy about how things turned out with their king?

  • Is it always easy to trust that God’s way is the best way?

Family Activity

Create a simple chart to hang in your house, perhaps in the kitchen or in your child’s bedroom where he can see it. Grab some crayons or stickers and let him decorate it however he wants. Throughout the day or week, whenever your child chooses God’s way, let him put a sticker on the chart. Once the chart is full, give him a special treat for choosing God’s way.

Wrap-Up

With each lesson, help your child apply what they have learned by asking, “What do you think God wants us to learn from this story?” If you get stuck with finding the answer, refer to the weekly Teaching Truths.
