Elementary // Love Week 2
Memory Verse:
“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NLT)

Questions to Ask Your Child
READ LUKE 15:11-32
What are some of the “wrong” things the younger brother did? (He disrespected his father by asking for his inheritance – that was like saying he wished his dad were dead. He left home and wasted his money on bad things. He was selfish, prideful, and foolish.) What were the consequences to his actions? (He had no money or friends, no place to live, no food, and was all alone.)
Look at verse 20. How did the father act differently than what the younger son hoped for? (The son thought he would have to work to earn his father’s love again. However, the father welcomed him back and the son didn’t have to do anything to earn it. The father loved him no matter what.) How did the father show the son his love? (He ran out to meet him, forgave him and threw a party to welcome him home.)
Look at verse 28. How did the older brother respond to his younger brother coming home? (He was so angry that his father forgave him and welcomed him back that he pouted.) Did the father show him love? How? (The father came out to him and wanted him to be a part of the celebration. He reminded his son that all he owned would be his someday.)
Did the father love one brother more than the other? (No.) Why do you say that? Which of the sons needed the father’s love? (Both sons did) Can you do anything to make God love you more? Can you do anything so bad that will make God love you less? (No)
Activity
Grab a stack of index cards and write 2-3 words from the memory verse (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT) on each card. Shuffle the cards together and see if you can put them in the correct order. Do it again, but time yourself to see how long it takes. You can even have a competition within your family to see who can do it the fastest!
